Mission for Submissions

ALRIGHT. So, the deadline for the submissions were October 23rd. I've gotten a few submissions, but not near as many as I'd like. I've talked to a few people about extensions, but I'd like to know what's holding people back. I want this to be easy and free for people, but I also don't want to be annoying about pestering everyone. I am TOTALLY open to comments or suggestions right now, PLEASE tell me how I could make things easier or more compelling or whatever! If you said you were doing it and simply don't want to anymore, that's totally fine by me, I'd just like to know why! If you want an extension, by all means, ask me.

If I don't get a satisfactory amount of submissions, I'm going to open the zine up to the Lesbian Literature class I'm in right now, and I know I'll get enough from that. But I believe in you all, and I wanted this zine to come from the community of people I surrround myself with. Feedback, please!

If you don't want to respond in the comment section, you can reach me at andythecrane@msn.com.

A note on gender!

Someone pointed out to me that I have been thus far ambiguous as to who I'd like contributing to bombshell. "Feminism is fun for all genders!" I COMPLETELY AGREE. When I first came up with the idea, I was sort of humble in that I assumed that not many people would be interesting in contributing, so I'd only really put out the call for submissions to people who I knew or thought might be interested in feminist issues, or people who I'd had conversations with on the subject; all of these conversations I'd had had been with females. However, I've been pleasantly surprised that a lot more people than I first assumed would be interested are in fact interested, people from all across the gender-spectrum, so I'd like to make it official that this is open to EVERYBODY! The more varied the perspectives, the more interesting and dynamic a zine we'll have, and I'd like everyone to feel welcome, respected and heard. I apologize for earlier ambiguity!

Issue One: Prompt!

You'll have to forgive me, as this first prompt is pretty general and boring, but I thought it might be appropriate for the first edition and I trust that you folks will find somewhere interesting within it to explore:

What does the word "feminism" mean to you? Do you find that it's an archaic concept or do you find relevence in it? Do you identify as a feminist? Why or why not? If so, what brought you to feminism?

Feel free to answer all or none of these questions within your response . . . I just wanted to provide a starting point. I'd like to recieve your responses within the next month, with the official deadline being Friday, October 23rd.

About bombshell!

bombshell is an experimental feminist zine, that at this point is in it's 'test-tube fetus' phase of life. I will begin by describing the thought-process that lead to the conception of this fetus. Ever since I learned about the existence of zines, I've been hankering to produce one myself. However, I didn't want it to be some fragmented collection of poems, quotes and images simply ejaculated into the zine-format with some clever name slapped on the front (I see this quite often). I needed a theme. Fortunately, my growing curiosity/passion for feminist thought crossed paths with my aimless desire to create a zine, and it was love at first sight; hence, the birth of this blog, which will hopefully, eventually, birth an actual physical zine.

As I now cease using love/sex/fetus/birth-related imagery to describe the conception (whoops) of bombshell, I'll explain the reason for the blog and what I want from you (gasp!). Get ready to digest a lot of lists. The idea is that every month or so (I'm thinking this will be loosely bimonthly), I'll post a prompt of some kind (could be an idea, quote, concept, image, word, phrase, passage, question, etc.) that will have to do with SOMETHING along the lines of feminism, sexism, classism, homophobia, or simply life as a girl in a patriarchal society, and you'll respond in some way, and then give me your response. You can be published under your name, under a pseudonym, or anonymously.* You can respond with ANYTHING AT ALL. It could be a short essay, a poem, an image, collage, drawing, quote, photography, personal experience, scathing tangent, fictional interview or story, ANYTHING. Creativity is welcome and encouraged. You can be as informal or formal, personal or general, raunchy or vanilla, detailed or simple as you want. The only restriction is that it needs to fit on a 5.5x9" piece of paper, and keep in mind that, at least for the first few issues (assuming we get past the first), it will probably end up in black or white. I'll be contributing as well myself. After I receive all the submissions, I will then compile, edit, publish, and distribute.

*A note on anonymity or pseudonymity: I will need to know who you are, because I'll need to contact you if I have any questions about editing. Otherwise, I'd be the only person to know who you are, if you so choose.

As my mind has exhausted itself for today on finally coming up with the concept for my first zine, hatching out the details and making this blog, I will post again within the next few days the first theme and deadline.
